Rubin Juvenile Court (2nd edition)
My father was my closest friend
But closer to my mother
I could not trust him with secrets
Secret feelings towards my mother
I begged him a dozen times
He said he had a duty to tell her
Then she called me into the 'warden's office'
What did you tell him, she demanded
"Go to your room and stay there
Till I tell you to come out!"
My bedroom was a cell in children's prison
Father crept in and warned me
Mother told him to lash me
"Try to sound in pain," he asked.
I did my best
I doubt it fooled her
Occasionally my sister played attorney
She warned me as often as she could
I listened
Sometimes my mother went off her deep end
After railing like a banshee at me
She went for other blood
Including my father
I stood out and challenged her
Why she has to find fault with them
When she found it with me
She almost always found in me
I could no longer live that way
"If you don't like to live here, you may leave."
She pointed to the door
I left home twice
Only to go back
Outside was so less secure
So I stood up and begged her to calm down
Carrying on over trifles
Mole hills into mountains
Finally I found the chance to leave home
After my graduation
I went abroad
She's gone long now
So am I
I haven't gone back yet
