Moonlight Sonata #5

The hour was half past eleven pm. The moon was gibbous or possibly full but half hidden by clouds. The streets of the city were still. The residents gathered in their respective houses and flats. Everywhere they waited for the midnight chime. They seemed to expect something to happen at that time.

In the parlor of a grand structure several mules from the town, a tall pale man sat before a grand piano and the chords of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata rang forth. The pianist was known to few as Frederic Pfaff, grandson of the late Professor Pfaff. Both were awesome musicians.

Frederic was not alone. Another man sat near him nervously. Frederic played and occasionally glanced icily at his guest. His guest was not invited in the socially prescribed manner. He was drawn into the parlor by the music.

"Carl, how about this composition?"
"It's beautiful, has a slight eerie mood to it,  Herr Pfaff. You brought me here to listen, I suppose."
"I did."

Frederic's guest was Carl Weiss, the grandson of the man who murdered Professor Pfaff after one last recital. Weiss was perplexed by this recital. Indeed, he had good cause. Although he had nothing to do with the murder, Frederic eyes him with chilling contempt.

"Carl, do you remember anything about your grandfather?"
"My grandfather? Herr Pfaff, the time passed is do much and besides both of us were only boys then. Why?"
"My grandfather, the great pianist, was murdered in cold blood, Carl Weiss, by your grandfather."
"This is a grudge!"
"Call it a grudge. Call it revenge. Listen more, Carl Weiss."

Frederic continued to perform and his guest sat almost paralyzed near him. He could neither leave his sets nor speak one word. Then, the church bell chimed twelve times. It merged with the chords of the piano. At the twelfth chime, suddenly Weiss collapsed. Frederic forced his mouth open and a puff of smoke like vapor slowly drifted out into the room. A moment later, Weiss lay motionless on the floor.

"You are very fortunate, Carl Weiss, that I did not simply murder you," Frederic muttered scornfully. Then he left the room for somewhere unknown.
The grandchildren of two men, one the noted pianist Professor Pfaff, meet in the parlour to the chords of the Moonlight Sonata and the latter, the grandson of the professor's murderer, loses his soul at the chime of midnight. Chilling revenge.
