How It Began

For Puabi

One late evening, date unknown to men,
In the heaven filled with stars,
Two figures stood and spoke
From their hearts.
"Mother, daughter needs love--
A man's love!
But who is there to love me?"
"Despair not, my daughter.
If he can be found, we will find him."
They moved from where they stood,
And they joined a tall figure with a beard;
He set forth to find the man desired,
To tell him of the daughter's plight.

That evening,
I stood over a circle scrawled in red
And I muttered a mystical word.
One hour later, our earthly time,
Two figures stood.
A man and a girl;
A father and a daughter;
Marduk and Puabi.

I received them both.
