Laura Edgefield continued deeper into the old house despite that her heart was thumping nervously. The scurrying was therefore amplified enough for her to hear it quite plainly. But, since she neither believed the rumors nor knew anything about the experiments, she could not identify the sounds. Laura continued straight ahead until she eventually encountered a large oak door that opened to the corridor that lay beyond it. She opened that as slowly as she had opened the front door and walked slowly and nervously into the corridor. The paper was pealing and falling from the walls onto the floor, and a musty odor of neglect and age filled the air--and her nostrils to boot. Yet, no spiders or other nocturnal creatures appeared.
