D.R.O.W

[Dying Races and Other Worlds]

I.                    Planning the Course

In the past years of its strange history, which includes research in Occult Sciences, the renowned institute of Miskatonic University, Arkham, Massachusetts, has agreed to open a new branch of the science in conjunction with Arkham Observatory. The new department is called D.R.O.W.--Dying Races and Other Worlds. However, some faculty of the University claim that the Old Ones are not dead yet. Recently, a reporter from the Massachusetts Tribune interviewed Occult Sciences H.O.D Roderick Valentine, M.Sc.

"Professor, are the Old Ones-like Cthulhu-dead or not?"

"No. We at Miskatonic University believe that they are either undying or resurrected."

"Has your department amassed enough evidence for that yet?"

"We are in the process now."

The reporter gasped. In reality, for an institute such as Miskatonic University, such a report was hardly so surprising.

The next evening, Professor Valentine met with his colleagues in the department to proceed with the slated project.

They convened at the Observatory to meet with Arkham astronomer Lazlo Lugosi.

"Good evening, gentlemen."

"Good evening, Lazlo."

"Shall we proceed?"

"Yes, let us proceed."

Lazlo Lugosi set the course of the telescope towards the Neptune-Pluto corridor; but, after he found no unusual activity, he spanned the remote corridor after Pluto and suddenly Nibiru[i] manifested. He alerted the professors about it.

"Gentlemen, Nibiru has appeared."

"That is very interesting, Lazlo. It must have some purpose."

"Evidently."

In the town, the wind was raging and the moon was new. A few townspeople who were outdoors at that moment noticed the sudden conditions; and they also saw Nibiru in the remote distance; but since they lacked sufficient knowledge, they could not react to it.

The wind rocked the electric lines of the town and made the lights flicker for a few hours. However, the Observatory and the university performed normally.

Behind them, the Observatory data seeker, an advanced system of computers which had only recently arrived there, was recording data. Lazlo Lugosi provided soft drinks to all, and they sat and discussed the new subject.

“The aim of the new subject should remain within the framework regarding only ‘dying races’ or ‘other worlds,’” Valentine asserted.

“What about data regarding the Old Ones?”

“They should be classified as ‘existing races.’”

“So, the department does not regard them as ‘dying?’” queried Lazlo.

“No. They are very old but the university has been seeking proper evidence that they are still alive.”

“You do not perceive that as ‘risky’?”

“Some risks may need to be taken. Data will begin here at the observatory, where it can be received more readily, and then transferred to the department to be adapted into a course for study.”

“Will the department require students to do lab work?”

“Not here, yet. You may continue to do your private observations first. We will notify you.”

The next afternoon, the department of Occult Sciences planned the following curricula for the university:

I.                    Dying Races

1.1  Grays

1.2   Suriyans

1.3   Others

II.                  Other Worlds

2.1  Lost worlds

2.2  Hidden worlds

Grays have been classified as ‘dying race’ for many years previously. There has been controversy   as to whether they have re-emerged on Earth or not, but supporters lack sufficient evidence. The Suriyans[ii] include Reptilicus . They are considered more intelligent than dinosaurs, and possess knowledge of science and technology; and they have built civilizations in many areas of the universe. ‘Others’ refers to any other species or race that is classified as a ‘dying race’. There have been rumors that these others include both the Old Ones and Elder Things, but the department staunchly denies these rumors.

The department promptly convened to assign the faculty to teach the subjects. However, the candidates did not include Ethan Strange or Ronald Carington. Ethan Strange had moved to Providence, Rhode Island, the previous year and Ronald Carington disappeared in January of that year.

“Strange and Carington would really be best choice, Valetine.”

“Certainly. But Strange is now in Rhode Island and there is no news about Carington yet. Philips, who is left?”

“There is Edward Callerton and Stephen Grimm, sir.  Callerton is familiar with Carington. They worked together here for two terms.”

“Put him on Dying Races and put Grimm onto Other Worlds.”

“Right away.”

[i] Yuggoth or X

[ii] Suriya is the Sanskritic deity of the sun, and a race so classified has a reptilian appearance and a need for warmth from the sun.
