Creeping Darkness

Lo, the night has fallen fast
All around is silent, still
Not a soul nor a word spoken
In the air a sudden chill
The night is more than most assume
The darkness creeps like a crawling fear
It consumes as though it has a dozen maws
Any living soul wandering near
In the town, they believe it best
To stay indoors through the night
But darkness lies everywhere
Who may know who will survive
In the morning light?
And wither wander
When every place may be dark
And the light is hours away?
Better to huddle off to the church
To pray for another day
Darkness itself may lurk. Never mind what lurks within it.
